Shows on Z107

Z107, while they had a "rich" classic hits format, was often run mostly unstaffed, with members of the AM station which shared its studio in its last several years changing tapes and doing other things as needed. Thus syndicated shows fit well, although Z107 also did quite a few shows in-house. They also broadcast local sporting events just like their sister station, WHJB AM. Among the syndicated shows heard on Z107:
Reelin' in the Years
Hosted by George Taylor Morris, this show had a format of songs with a common theme or year each week, a focus artist, and other unique features. Among those, they played "long songs". Most recently heard Sunday nights from 7 til 9, it is now not heard in Pittsburgh. Q94 in Altoona and WYFM in Youngstown are the closest stations airing it.
Flashback
Hosted by Dan Fermento and then by Bill Saint James, this show had a similar format to Reelin', but was longer. The first hour was a theme or year, while the second was news, focus on an artist, and other tidbits. It aired most recently on Z107 on Saturday morning from 10 til noon. It's a Radio Today Entertainment program.
The Lost Lennon Tapes
A Westwood One program, now not on for several years. The Beatles Years followed it in the same time slot.
The Beatle Years
Hosted most recently by J. J. Jackson, the Beatle Years is another Westwood One program. Each week they focus on a different time, album or event of the Beatles career. It aired most recently Sunday mornings at 8 AM for one hour; Around the time of the Beatles Anthology series on ABC, it aired from 11 pm until midnight on Sunday as well.
The Superstar Concert Series
This program, another Westwood One production, has had many hosts. It airs a different concert each week that was recorded live by a classic rock artist some time in the past. This 90 minute show aired most recently Saturday nights at 10:30, but the DJ at the AM station at the time occasionally would forget to start the tape and it wouldn't air. WRRK has been airing it (I think) Wednesday night at 9pm. It's hosted by J.J. Jackson.
The King Biscuit Flower Hour
A production of the DIR radio networks and the longest running syndicated concert series, this show also broadcast concerts recorded live in the past. It aired most recently on Sunday nights at 6 pm, running until 7. It was hosted by Bill Minkin.
The BBC Classic Track
Each day at noon, Z107 featured a classic track from the BBC's radio archives.
While not a show, Z107 also aired the Flashback Pop Quiz, a pop/rock trivia question of the day, on weekdays. It aired Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:10 am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:10 pm. Z107 also aired "Today in Rock History" at various times throughout the day until about May of 1996. Both were Westwood One productions.

Jazzz Impressions
Hosted by WSSZ's own Jim DeCesare, this show played the latest Jazz and New Age music for two hours each Sunday morning from 9 til 11. When Jim moved on after the end of Z107 to WCNS/WLCY, the show went with him. See the page on Jim for more information.
On Air with the Grateful Dead
Hosted by Neal Ketchman, this show aired each Sunday night live from 9 til 11 pm. It gave the latest in Grateful Dead news, music was played, and listeners could call in. It went off the air not long after Jerry Garcia died.
For Headphones Only
All I know is it aired Sunday night after the Grateful Dead show. More details would be appreciated.
Freeway Jam/Alive at Five
These shows aired during evening rush hour starting at 5 pm; Monday through Thursday the Freeway Jam played a half hour of music recorded live by various artists. Friday was the full hour Alive at Five show, featuring the same theme of music recorded live.
Soul Fix at Six
Weekdays at 6 pm, WSSZ featured three classic soul tunes.
Classic Seven at Seven
Weekdays at 7 pm, a group or theme was featured for seven songs. Artists in town or in the news were frequent subjects of this show.
Sports Trivia
For a few months in late 1995/early 1996, Greg Trout hosted a Sports Trivia show at T.J.'s Sports Lounge in New Stanton, from 8 til 9 pm. The show was interesting, but unfortunately didn't last long.
There was also a weekend entertainment guide which aired Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:20 am, 12:20 pm and 6:20 pm. For a while, the American Band local band listings, sponsored by David Palmer's American Music, aired Monday through Wednesday at those same times.
